On Sept. 1st, the appraisal results of 2014 Metallurgical Science and Technology Award of the China Iron and Steel Association and the Chinese Society for Metals were officially announced. TISCO’s project “Micro-fine complex refractory hematite and magnetite beneficiation technology development and equipment integration for 22 million ton/year” won the grand prize. The project “Duplex stainless steel bar for cross-sea bridge and its application technology development” won first prize. The projects “Ultra-high purity vacuum-tightness pure iron series products and its technology development”, “ Key technology and product development of high grade stainless steel welding strip” and “Technical research on non-hazardous treatment of stainless steel slag and its resource utilization” won second and third prize respectively. This is the best accomplishment that TISCO has got in the appraisal of China Metallurgical Science and Technology Award over the years.

In recent years, TISCO vigorously implements the innovation-driven strategy, guides all the employees to set up the innovative concept of “feel happy when made innovation, pioneer the use of the advanced technology, occupy the market by new products”, builds up the innovative culture of “ encourage innovation, tolerate failure and pursue the excellence”, practices the SBU, publicly employs the chief directors of the research projects, contracts the research projects, and rewards handsomely the person and the team that makes outstanding contributions. TISCO has established the technological innovation strategic alliance with universities and institutes at home and abroad and strengthened the technical exchanges with peers from home and abroad. TISCO continues to make breakthroughs in the key technologies of production processes, technologies, products and raw materials of special steels (mainly the stainless steel) and takes the leading position in international competition. Now TISCO has the innovation platforms such as the State Key Laboratory for Advanced stainless Steel Materials, the Shanxi Stainless Steel Engineering Research Center, the Engineering Research Center of Steel for Railway Vehicles, and the Key Laboratory for Advanced Stainless Steel Materials. The contribution rate of the technologies in TISCO is more than 75%.

The grand prize winning project “Micro-fine complex refractory hematite and magnetite beneficiation technology development and Equipment integration for 22 million ton/year” solved the key and difficult technique problems of micro-fine ore grinding, classification, floating, concentration and so on, which indicated that we made a historical breakthrough in micro-fine complex refractory hematite and magnetite beneficiation technology that had nagged us for a long time, played a leading and exemplary role in promoting the development and utilization of micro-fine complex refractory mineral resources and provided valuable experiences for the construction of the oversize iron mines in China. The successful development and production of duplex stainless steel for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge solved the technical problems of industrial production, bending, process and joint of the duplex stainless steels and made the batch application in bridge in China for the first time, which promoted the upgrading of the materials for the construction of the cross-sea bridge.

As far as I know, China Metallurgical Science and Technology Award Committee reviewed the projects according to Regulations of China Iron and Steel Association and the Chinese Society for Metals for the Metallurgical Science and Technology Award and its rules for the implementation. 79 projects were awarded the 2014 China Metallurgical Science and Technology Award of China Iron and Steel Association and the Chinese Society for Metals. Among them, two projects were awarded the grand prize, 8 projects were awarded first prize, 26 projects were awarded second prize, 43 projects were awarded third prize.
