Recently, the project of drafting an international standard "Stainless Steel Reinforcing Bars for Reinforced Concrete" was formally approved by the Technical Committee for Steel Reinforcement and Pre-stressed Concrete of the Steel Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC17/SC16). The compilation work will be led by China Metallurgical Construction Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Metallurgical Industry Information Standards Research Institute, with participation of TISCO and other drafters.
Stainless steel reinforcing bar is featured with corrosion resistance and high strength. It is an important basic material for the construction of piers, tunnels and other key parts under severe corrosion conditions such as cross-sea bridges and offshore platforms. It is difficult to produce, with only a few producers in the world master the technology. Since 2012, TISCO has intensified its research and development efforts, and has successively broken through a number of bottlenecks such as "Life Cycle Assessment Method of Stainless Steel Reinforcing bars in Marine Environment", "High Cohesion, High Fatigue Life, Rib Shape and Connection of High Strength Reinforcing bars", and etc. The duplex stainless steel reinforcing bars produced by TISCO has been applied to Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, followed by Brunei Bridge and Tseung Kwan O Bridge, and so on. It is reported that the construction of cross-sea bridges is an important part of the national marine economic strategy. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the country will continue to exert its strength in promoting the upgrading of traditional marine industries. Stainless steel bars will have broader market prospects, with more applications in marine oil and gas industry, marine equipment manufacturing industry and other fields are expected.
The preparatory group for the international standard has held two meetings in China, carefully reviewed a series of application files, and made a detailed statement at the video annual meeting held by ISO/TC17/SC16 in November 2020. Subsequently, the Secretariat initiated a vote. By the end of the voting day, more than two-thirds of the member countries agreed to approve the project, which was widely supported by experts from Norway, South Korea, Austria, Japan, Britain, France, Iran and other countries.
The Outline of National Innovation-Driven Development Strategy issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council puts forward that "the interactive supporting mechanism of technological innovation, patent protection and standardization should be improved, and advanced technologies should be transformed into standards in a timely manner". Standards are the bridge and link to promote the transformation and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements, and are an important embodiment of the soft power of enterprises. There is a causal link among standards compilation, scientific and technological innovation and product development. The establishment of this international standard fills the gap in stainless steel bars, and will provide technical support for the global production and trade of stainless steel bars. It is the first time for TISCO to participate into the draft of an international standard in the field of stainless steel products. It is of great significance to the company's promotion of technical soft power and internationalization. It will lay a solid foundation for TISCO's technical development, application and promotion, economic and trade exchanges in the international market of stainless steel bars, as well as promote TISCO's products to go global in a better manner.
