Ni-based alloy has been produced successfully by TISCO’s bow-type continuous casting machine with straight mold, after the technicians and workers of the No. 2 Steel Making Plant making significant technical breakthrough, an inspiring message stated. It is the first big-scale commercial application of this technology globally, helping TISCO to increase the market share of Ni-based alloy, safeguarding the photovoltaic polycrystalline silicon production in China, and marching forward solidly in the fulfillment of China Baowu’s mission of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”.
Ni-based alloy, a raw material of photovoltaic polycrystalline silicon, normally produced by molding or vacuum induction furnace smelting. Its production and application are severely limited due to low yield ratio, insufficient production efficiency, high cost, and unstable product quality. Despite the efficient and stable productivity of wide bow-type CCM with straight mold, the Ni-based alloy slabs are tend to occur sever defects including longitudinal cracks, transversal cracks, internal cracks and porosity, due to its high alloy content and high crack-sensitivity. The technology is quite a unique episode, without example in global steel industry.
Faced with this "neck sticking" challenge, TISCO No.2 Steel-making Plant and the Technology Center boldly adjusted the technological parameters of smelting and casting processes and stimulated the technical proposal based on repeated plans, tests, verifications and trials. The most advanced intermediate frequency electric furnace, AOD, VOD and LF are used for melting and the wide bow-type CCM with straight mold is used for casting. Since last November, multiple grades of Ni-based alloys have been successfully produced in trials and are ready for mass production. It is for the first time for mills at home and abroad to realize the effective, stable and low-cost application of this technology.
