“Made in TISCO” Applied Into “Man-made Sun” Again

 

On May 13, exciting new came from China Nuclear Fusion Research Base: all indicators of TISCO stainless steel extrusion products meet the requirements of ITER project and the products are accepted by the expert group. This is a new series of products applied in ITER project after nuclear fusion copper + stainless steel clad plate, which are all independently developed by TISCO.

 

 “ITER”, abbreviation of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and nicknamed as “man-made sun”, is the second largest multi-lateral large scale scientific cooperative program, inferior to the program of “International Space Station”. By integrating major scientific and technology achievements in the study of controlled magnetic confinement fusion all over world, the program will be a significant step for the transformation of this technology from research to application.

 

The stainless steel extrusion products accepted by the expert group will be used for conductor coil case in ITER program. Materials for ITER program are separated into hundreds of purchasing package and will be manufactured in global wide. In early 2010, TISCO had started technical research and development on related products for correction field coil (CC) purchasing package.

 

In this purchasing package, conductor coil case is originally designed to made by welding process, but after carefully analysis, TISCO technical personnel suggests to adopt direct extrusion forming instead of welding forming because the product made from this has not only stable and reliable appearance quality, but also better internal organization quality gained during the process of high temperature hot extrusion. Once the new proposal put forward, it immediately gets positive response from CC purchasing package, and two parties start cooperation test at once.

In order to ensure success of the test, TISCO attaches great importance through careful arrangement on equipment, technology, process and personnel, and jointly cooperates with ITER Program International Organization, European Nuclear Research Center, International Thermonuclear Fusion Energy Center of National Ministry of Science and Technology, Plasma Department of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other scientific research institutions. After six years of efforts, TISCO successfully produces stainless steel extrusion products customized for ITER program.

Project Manager Mr. Zhang Baolin of TISCO Military and Nuclear Power Product Development Department said, in recent years, TISCO has gradually developed many special materials such as copper + stainless steel clad plate with large thickness, rectangular steel, pipe with a shape of inner round and outer square for ITER program, making a positive contribution for nuclear fusion. In the future, there will be more and more TISCO made products applied in the "man-made sun".
